The Three Musketeers Is All For Nothing, Nothing Much For All

When director Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich try to get Resident Medieval, it's all for nothing, nothing much for all. If you're just looking for some elegant production design in subpar 3-D, it delivers that. But you can probably find a cheaper way of enjoying such things than the price of a current movie ticket. Like maybe a View-Master.

Going into this movie expecting a faithful adaptation of Alexandre Dumas is like watching the Adam West Batman TV show and becoming upset that you didn't get Christopher Nolan. Rest assured, this movie's low grade isn't due to its lack of fealty to source. In fact, when Jovovich acrobats herself through what appear to be infrared anti-theft beams, with utterly no explanation of how such things can exist in pre-technological times, it's one of the highlights of the film. And yes, the airships are reasonably cool. Anderson certainly thinks so, anyway, as the entire movie is a set-up to get people in them, at which point he cribs blatantly from The Wrath of Khan. Other barely disguised steals include the rooftop swordfight from The Crow, and a significant line of dialogue from The Princess Bride. We know Anderson doesn't much care for coming up with his own material, as with few exceptions, his filmography consists of video-game adaptations and remakes. But couldn't he have appropriated something more akin to the milieu...Barry Lyndon, perhaps? To his dubious credit, he has picked out a theme song that's just a bad as the Rod Stewart/Bryan Adams/Sting number "All For Love" from the 1993 Disney version of this same tale. What tale, you ask? The premise is familiar: young swordsman D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) wants to join the famous Three Musketeers (Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans, and Ray Stevenson), and like them, winds up falling afoul of Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz), who is secretly plotting against the king of France with the aid of England's evil Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom). Using both sides against each other is the aptly named "Milady," played, naturally, by Anderson's #1 lady Jovovich. And that's it, really. The characters just sort of hang around the general palace area until it's airship battle time. Plus, like the Resident Evil sequels, this movie doesn't end with any closure—it just delivers a hook for an unlikely-to-be-made sequel that promises more than it can deliver. Anderson's fond of using 3-D to show off explosions of splintering wood and dust, but aside from that there's little to recommend the process; barely even much sword-pointing into the audience, which ought to be a no-brainer. The 180—a Second Opinion: The actors are all perfectly fine, but it would be nice if somebody had thought to give them something to do. Other than Milla, who swings sexy stunts as always.

The Big Year is a movie about competitive bird watching and stars Owen Wilson as the champion — a man who has spotted more than 700 bird species in a single year — and Steve Martin and Jack Black as two of his challengers. The contest’s color analyst … er … narrator is John Cleese, who also provides a primer on the sport of “birding.” The movie, writes Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times, “has an innocence and charm that will make it appealing for families, especially those who have had enough whales and dolphins for the year.” A.O. Scott in the New York Times uses the adjectives “gentle and low-key” to describe the film, adjectives that are unlikely to turn up in ads appearing on the movie pages, where the preferred words for selling comedies include “outrageous” and “uproarious.” Likewise Ty Burr in the Boston Globe observes that the three leading characters in the movie are “good company. So, in its fubsy [dumpy] way, is the movie.” And Betsy Sharky writes that while the movie “might not soar … there is some harmless pleasure to be found when feathers aren’t ruffled, when the fowl is not foul.” Rex Reed in the New York observer was neither charmed by the movie — nor by its stars. “Steve Martin has isolated moments trying in vain to choke some humor out of a film that is only slightly less amusing than a case of bird fever,” he writes, “but he’s got his work cut out for him sharing the screen with Jack Black and Owen Wilson, two of the screen’s most annoying unsolved mysteries.” And Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune concludes that this “gentle, diffident concoction … has barely enough pulse to power a hummingbird.” »

Adapted from a children's book by Bloom County artist Berkeley Breathed, Mars Needs Moms is visually inventive and occasionally emotionally potent, but feels overly padded in its attempt to stretch such a short story to feature length.

The Bigger Picture: Following a thorough, broccoli-related scolding, young Milo (voiced by Seth Dursky, motion-captured by Seth Green) loudly opines that life would be better if he didn't have a mom at all.

Little does he expect invaders from Mars to come and grant his wish! But before long, he's hitching a ride on the rocketship of malevolent mom-nappers, en route to the red planet, where her brain patterns will be transferred to disposable robot nannies.

Mars has gender issues to the extreme: the males, who are confined to lower levels of the planet, like to dance around mountains of trash, and vaguely resemble the kind of crowd you might see at a poetry slam, but with even more body hair. The women, meanwhile, who look kind of like anime caricatures of Cameron Diaz, run around shiny corridors wielding weapons.

With the aid of the planet's only human resident, an overweight man-child named Gribble (Dan Fogler), Milo must rescue his mother before her mind is wiped. This will involve a lot of precarious maneuvering around massive chasms, and discovering just how it came to be that the Martians lost the mothering instinct.

Muscle, training and technology are his allies; aches, breaks and faltering will are his foes. When Alfred (Michael Caine) tends to Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale)’s post-fight contusions, he warns his master to know his limits. “Batman has no limits” comes the flat reply. Only, of course, Batman is limited by his beliefs. He’d rather break his own neck than snap the rule that has steered his crim-bashing excursions away from blunt Death Wish morality. He will be the judge and the jury, but he will not be the executioner. He will not kill. But if Batman’s morality is a construct, The Joker (Heath Ledger) is a wrecking ball.

Just as Wayne is contemplating an end to his crime-fighting endeavour – seeing hope in the arrival of Gotham’s “White Knight”, District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) – along comes this anarchic, mischievous terrorist daubed in “war paint”, outwitting and then uniting the underworld in one aim: kill the Batman. Desperate crimes call for desperate measures, but just how far will Gotham’s Caped Crusader go to save himself, his city and everyone he loves?

How far is too far is a pertinent question in the age of Abu Ghraib, Guantánamo and 42 days’ detention without charge – but while the Nolans (Christopher and co-writer brother Jonathan) touch on everything from extreme interrogation to monitoring communications – in an actually quite bewildering tech-stretch sequence – they don’t draw glib parallels or let the War on Terror allusions overpower the entertainment. This isn’t Michael Moore’s Batman, though there’s a touch of Michael Mann in the visuals, with Gotham no longer a gloomy, gothic comic-book creation, more the corrupt conurbation of Heat. As for those The Godfather: Part II promises in the pre-release pieces?

Right there on the screen, in the hollowed out face of Bale, as he contemplates the consequences of his actions. His brilliance has become almost commonplace but shouldn’t be overlooked – he brings light and shade, depth and compassion to a character previous Bat-men have often made monochrome – though there’s no doubting the limelight will be on the late Ledger, burning brightly as he embodies an icon.

Not that the film isn’t interested in motivations – as evidenced by Harvey Dent’s journey to the dark side (though the less said about that the better; go discover it for yourself).

If The Dark Knight has a flaw, it’s that the attention to each character results in a crammed, tumultuous movie, even at two and a half hours. There’s so much going on, so much energy and ambition, that the through line becomes a little muddled. But just use that as an excuse for a repeat performance. That Mr Nolan: he has a taste for the theatrical.
